1.2 million reasons to expand at Billund Airport

Ryanair at billund

No Ryanair? No problem! Billund Airport’s market isn’t slowing down. In fact, it has never been stronger or shown more potential. In an angry rage over the newly introduced government green-tax, amounting to four euros per departing passenger, Ryanair has decided to stop all 24 routes from Billund and leave 1.2 million passengers annually without seats, from the end of March 2025!

While some airlines have increased capacity and others have ‘reopened’ new destinations, there’s still plenty of room for others to grow. The only question is: Who’s ready to meet the wealthy consumer demand?

Ryanair may have scaled back, but other airlines have already seen potential in Billund. Norwegian has stepped in with increased frequencies to Alicante and Malaga and has added six weekly flights between Billund and London Gatwick. Vueling is returning with flights to Barcelona this summer, and Wizz Air is expanding with new routes, strengthening connections to Central and Eastern Europe.

Billund offers great opportunities, and there’s still space for new airlines to make their mark.

Western Denmark wants more

Billund Airport serves a region with a strong mix of leisure and business travellers. The airport’s strategic location in Western Denmark – in the middle of nowhere – results in the fact that the airport’s catchment is three times the size of its West Danish peers – actually placing it in the center of everything.

The time to move is now

Timing is crucial in route development, and right now, Billund’s a great place to be for anyone looking to expand just as Ryanair has over the past 17 years, building up the market and leaving warm routes and high demand behind. The airport continues to attract interest, but as competition intensifies, the best opportunities won’t be around forever.
