A new chapter for Billund Airport

As Billund Airport adapts to changes in the market, new opportunities for growth are emerging.
The first Ryanair-free month at Billund Airport is in the books. Unsurprisingly, overall traffic in April saw a dip compared to last year. But behind the numbers, something else is happening: network carriers and charter are quietly gaining ground. While we lost 130.000 Ryanair passengers in April, network and charter airlines gained 30.000+ passengers on capacity similar to April 2024 – passenger loads in Billund are booming!
It’s been a busy few months with 1.1 million annual “Ryanair-passengers” now up for grabs. Norwegian has stepped up, adding more frequencies on key routes. Vueling is back big time on the route to Barcelona, while Wizz Air is expanding its network with four additional routes. British Airways is also increasing frequencies on its London Heathrow route from the upcoming winter schedule. We’re heading into a summer with new routes – and a winter season that’s shaping up to be the most exciting in years.
Billund’s Path Forward
Travellers from Western Denmark are eagerly waiting for someone to pick up where Ryanair left off. Billund Airport’s catchment covers a wide region with strong purchasing power, a high share of business travellers, and a steady stream of families heading south year-round. It’s a balanced mix – and one that has proven resilient through industry ups and downs.
That’s why our route development team has spent recent months in deep conversations with existing and potential partners. Some doors have already opened. Others still need the right knock. Billund Airport’s teams in route development, marketing, and communications are fully committed to supporting both current and incoming airlines. From tailored marketing campaigns to collaborative communication efforts, we are doing everything in our power to help ensure the success of new routes and strengthen the ones already in operation.
So while April won’t go down as a record month, it’s part of a bigger shift in capacity. One where we see growth in the right places, long-term potential, and an airport that’s more ready than ever to support expansion.
