Air Service One – Bitesize Analysis of the Day – 17th March 2026 – Hamburg Airport 2010 – 2025

ASO Bitesize Analysis

Hamburg Airport serves western Europe’s largest city that isn’t the capital of a country. Last year it welcomed 14.77m passengers, still 15% fewer than in 2019, and was Germany’s fifth busiest airport.

Back in 2010 Lufthansa and airberlin shared almost 65% of seat capacity. The latter collapsed in 2017 and Lufthansa now accounts for just 15% of seats. However, its lower-cost subsidiary Eurowings is now the leading carrier with around 26% of seats according to AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium schedules data.

Last year Wizz Air overtook Ryanair to become the airport’s leading non-German carrier. Hamburg is now Wizz Air’s third biggest German airport after Dortmund Airport and Flughafen Memmingen (FMM). The Irish ULCC has had as much as 8% of the airport’s capacity. The same is true for easyJet which made Hamburg a base in 2014 and had 8% of seats in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2025 it had just under 3%.

New carriers in Hamburg last year were Croatia Airlines and Greek carrier SKY express. New in 2026 are AIR UNIQON GmbH (flying to Flughafen Friedrichshafen GmbH) and coming soon (hopefully), Royal Jordanian to Amman.

Birmingham Airport

New destinations planned for 2026 include Amman, Bodrum (with AJet), Bucharest BBU (Wizz Air), Friedrichshafen, Kalamata (Condor Airlines), Marrakech (easyJet), Podgorica (Wizz Air) and Tallinn (airBaltic).
