Air Service One – Bitesize Analysis of the Day – 4th June 2026 – Domestic air travel market 2015-2026

ASO Bitesize

The Spanish domestic air travel market has been relatively stable for the last decade with five main players (Vueling Airlines, Iberia, Ryanair, Air Europa and BINTER CANARIAS) accounting for 95% of seat capacity. AIR SERVICE ONE analysis of Cirium schedules data for the first half of 2026 reveals that seat capacity is up just 1% versus 2025H1.

An interesting development this year has seen Ryanair reduce the number of Spanish domestic routes it operates by one-third, from 69 routes in June 2025 to 45 routes in June 2026. It has reduced seat capacity by 18% and ASKs (Available Seat Kilometres) by 32%, resulting in a significant lowering of its average sector length in this market.

Vueling and Iberia (both part of the International Airlines Group (IAG)) have consistently accounted for 55% to 60% of Spanish domestic seat capacity. Post-pandemic, Binter Canarias has seen the biggest growth in market share from 12% to 15%. Outside of these top 5, Volotea has increased capacity by 35% versus 2025H1 and now has just over 3% of the market. Note that easyJet has not operated any Spanish domestic routes since 2012 when it still had a base at Madrid Airport.
