Billund Airport
Billund Airport is West Denmark’s main international gateway and the second busiest airport in the country. Over the past few years, it has set passenger records as its number of airline partnerships has grown.
The airport matched its pre-pandemic passenger volume as early as 2022, followed by a record-breaking year in 2023, with 3,975,834 travellers. This figure represents a 7% increase compared to 2019 levels.
Located on the doorstep of the popular LEGOLAND Billund Resort and the nearby scenic coast, the airport’s network growth over the past few years has strongly contributed to the surge in inbound tourism, which has exceeded the overall increase in Denmark.
Contributing to Billund’s success and its fast-paced recovery was the addition of several new airlines. In 2023, Air Greenland commenced seasonal flights to Kangerlussuaq, now replaced by Nuuk and further expanded with the addition of Reykjavik in 2025, while PLAY inaugurated operations to the Icelandic capital.
The summer of 2024 saw further expansion, with Norwegian launching several new seasonal routes from Billund, including Alicante, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, and Stockholm ARN. airBaltic also added a new route to Tallinn, complementing its services to Riga and Gran Canaria.
In the 2024 summer season, Spain was Billund’s largest international market, measured by the passengers’ final destination, followed by the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, and Norway.
In 2025, SAS introduces a new service between Billund and Copenhagen, in its quest to build the latter into a major hub. It will operate 27-weekly flights between the two with the route being restored after five years. Also, Norwegian is opening a new route to London-Gatwick in late June with 6 weekly flights, while also adding more capacity on the routes to Malaga and Alicante. Furthermore, Wizz Air is opening four new routes to Chisinau, Gdansk, Katowice, and Vilnius for a total of 11 weekly flights.
During the 2025 summer season, KLM is the airport’s largest airline by available seat capacity, followed by Lufthansa (incl. Air Dolomiti), SAS and Wizz Air.
Contributing to Billund Airport’s success has been its ability to attract both full-service legacy carriers and low-cost alternatives, resulting in a diverse range of options for travellers.
