Faro Airport serves Portugal’s Algarve region, which is renowned for its beaches, villages and cultural scene. The airport handled 9.8 million passengers in 2024, making it Portugal’s third-busiest. Faro has seen consistent growth in passenger numbers, driven by the region’s popularity as a holiday destination. Seasonal peaks are common, with summer months witnessing the highest traffic due to the influx of tourists.
Low-cost and leisure carriers are dominant at the airport, with Ryanair being the largest based on seat capacity, followed by the likes of easyJet and Jet2.com. With British tourists topping visitor numbers in Portugal, the United Kingdom is by far the largest market out of Faro, accounting for 45% of total annual capacity in 2024. It is so significant that it is over four times the size of second-placed Germany.
Out of the top ten busiest routes, six include UK airports. London LGW remains number one, just as it has been for many years. There are close to 70-weekly departures from Faro to Gatwick in the peak month of August.
During the 2025 summer season, Faro will welcome its second long-haul and transatlantic service with United launching seasonal summer flights to New York EWR. It becomes Faro’s first US route. New York EWR joins Air Transat’s service to Toronto, launched in 2011. The Canadian leisure carrier serves Faro year-round.
Network opportunities include prospects for establishing more year-round flights to key European cities, catering to the growing trend of off-season travel, as well as expanding frequencies on existing services.
