Stockholm Skavsta Airport, one of only two privately operated airports in Sweden, is located on the southern side of Stockholm serves as the southern gateway to Stockholm and the east coast as well as central Sweden. Located near the town of Nyköping, the airport with a catchment of over 200km and more than 4 million people, the airport originally established itself as a hub for air cargo and budget-conscious travellers seeking connections across Europe. Originally a military airbase, Stockholm Skavsta was converted for civilian use in the late 1980s. It saw rapid expansion during the early 2000s as Ryanair and other low-cost carriers increased operations, positioning it as an alternative to Stockholm Arlanda. At its peak the airport had 61 destinations including even long-haul destinations such as Boston and Lahore.
The Covid-19 pandemic affected Skavsta Airport more heavily than many other airports, leading to Ryanair’s base closure. Compounding the effect was the engine issue problems suffered by Wizz Air which has seen Wizz Air have to reduce their services to Belgrade, Bucharest, and Warsaw at present. Once these issues are rectified, we envisage once again strong growth with Wizz Air.
Norwegian entered the market two years ago and offer year-round flights to Alicante and Malaga, along with seasonal service to Palma de Mallorca. TUI, the world’s leading tour operator, introduced charter flights from Skavsta Airport to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria over the 2024/25 winter season. The weekly flights, operated by Jettime, run from mid-October to mid-April.
SkyUp Airlines have just announced that they will enter the market and will open a year-round twice weekly service to Chisinau in Moldova and this is the first time in history that a direct route will exist between the Swedish and Moldovan capitals.
Stockholm Skavsta is also the base for Swedish Coast Guard operations and the Swedish Fire Fighting Aviation Wing along with MRO operations and defence industry with companies such as SAAB located on site.
Stockholm Skavsta Airport has the infrastructure to support large-scale operations. The terminal features a range of amenities, including restaurants, duty-free shopping, currency exchange, and car rental services. With a capacity to handle up to six million passengers annually and room for further expansion, the airport is well-equipped for growth. Additionally, it provides both long-term and short-term parking options for travellers and a 300-room bed hotel just a two minute walk from the terminal.
Stockholm Skavsta Airport is open 24/7, has 2 active runways and from September 2025 will have upgraded to Instrument Landing System (ILS) CAT IIIB. This enhancement will allow aircraft to land safely in adverse weather conditions, including dense fog and near-zero visibility. The upgrade will minimise disruptions, resulting in more reliable operations for airlines and passengers.
