Athens Airport extends record growth as global connectivity expands

Athens International Airport (AIA) has firmly established itself as one of Europe’s most dynamic and resilient aviation hubs, delivering consecutive years of record‑breaking performance and setting new benchmarks in growth, connectivity, sustainability and airline partnership.
Building on the record‑breaking momentum of 2024, 2025 proved to be another outstanding year and an all-time recordfor Athens International Airport. For the full year, AIA welcomed 33.9 million passengers, representing a 6.7% year‑on‑year increase and reaffirming Athens’ position among Europe’s top‑performing aviation markets. International traffic rose by 8.6%to 24.4 million passengers, while domestic traffic increased by 2.2%, reaching 9.6 million passengers. Aircraft movements climbed to 283.6 thousand, an increase of 5.7%, while foreign resident arrivals surged by 10.1%, adding nearly 800,000 passengers. At the same time, Greek residents travelling abroad increased by 6.4%.
According to the ACI EUROPE Airport Traffic Report (December 2025), Athens ranked 1st among European mega‑airports (25–40 million passengers), recording the strongest rebound since 2019 with +33% growth, clearly demonstrating the airport’s resilience and effective route development strategy. Seasonality continued to smooth out, with the highest growth recorded during shoulder and winter months, further strengthening Athens’ position as a true year‑round destination.
Network development was a key growth driver throughout 2025, marking one of the most dynamic expansion phases in AIA’s history. Five new airlines joined the Athens network, while 18 new destinations were launched and 13 additional serviceswere added on existing routes, significantly strengthening capacity and frequency across core markets.
Long‑haul connectivity took a major step forward with the introduction of new direct services to Los Angeles, Charlotte and Chengdu, substantially enhancing Athens’ reach to the United States and China and reinforcing its role as a strategic gateway between Europe, North America and Asia.
Momentum continues into 2026, which is already shaping up to be another transformative year. Long‑haul connectivity will be further strengthened with the launch of direct Dallas Fort Worth services by American Airlines, increasing US connectivity to 103 weekly frequencies, a 124% increase compared to pre‑pandemic levels, and expanding links to nine US destinations.
At the same time, Athens’ European network will broaden with new routes to Tallinn, Gdańsk, Varna, Casablanca, Rotterdam and Verona, while AnimaWings joins the network with services to Timisoara and Cluj, and TAP Air Portugal returns to Athens after 15 years with flights to Lisbon. Aegean Airlines will further enhance Mediterranean connectivity by adding services to Bari and Paphos.

Most notably, 2026 marks the opening of the Indian market, with IndiGo launching the first‑ever direct flights to Delhi and Mumbai, positioning Athens as one of the first European gateways connected to India using the Airbus A321XLR, the first of its kind in the airline’s fleet and in the Indian market. Overall, confirmed developments for 2026 include 11 new routes, three additional frequencies on existing destinations and the introduction of three new airlines.
These achievements are underpinned by Athens International Airport’s innovative and non‑discriminatory incentive’s scheme, comprising 14 incentive programs with 3‑ to 5‑year discount structures supporting new route development, capacity expansion, season extension, promotional fares and off‑peak operations. Through this comprehensive approach, AIA reinforces its commitment to sustainable network growth and long‑term airline partnerships.

In addition, AIA introduced a Sustainability Support Scheme in 2025, offering per‑passenger discounts for airlines operating newer aircraft and using Sustainable Aviation Fuel. The scheme has been extended through 2026. Furthermore, the Passenger Terminal Facility Charge is reduced by 30% between October 2025 and April 2026, encouraging airlines to expand winter capacity.
Sustainability remains at the core of AIA’s strategy. Through the ROUTE 2025 initiative, Athens International Airport reached Net Zero Carbon Emissions by the end of 2025, 25 years ahead of the aviation industry target, driven by large‑scale renewable energy production. At the same time, the airport is implementing a €1.3 billion expansion plan, which will increase annual capacity by 46% by 2032 to support future demand.
Athens’ performance continues to receive international recognition. At ROUTES WORLD 2025, the airport was named Overall Winner, as well as the Winner at the Over 20 million passengers’ category while at the ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards 2025, Athens International Airport was awarded Best Airport in the 25–40 million passenger category and received the Highly Commended recognition for Digital Transformation.

Athens International Airport contributes €8.6 billion annually to the Greek GDP and plays a pivotal role in positioning Athens as a leading European city‑break and year‑round destination. With sustained traffic growth, expanding global connectivity, strong airline partnerships and a firm commitment to sustainability, Athens International Airport is not merely keeping pace with global aviation trends – it is helping to define them.
