Birmingham Airport records busiest May on record
Birmingham Airport handled more than 1.3 million passengers last month, marking the busiest May in the airport’s history and representing year-on-year growth of 3.2%.
The record performance follows a strong 2025, during which the airport welcomed 13.7 million passengers, its highest annual total on record.
The airport attributed the growth to sustained demand across both leisure and business travel markets. Dublin, Mallorca, Amsterdam and Alicante ranked among the most popular destinations during the month.
Birmingham Airport currently offers services to 145 direct destinations and provides onward connections to more than 650 destinations worldwide through its airline partners.
May also saw further expansion of the airport’s route network, with easyJet launching flights to Nice and Jet2 introducing services to Jersey.
In addition, surface access to the airport was enhanced with the introduction of new FlixBus services linking Birmingham Airport with Oxford and central London.
The airport continues to progress with its £300 million investment programme, which includes terminal upgrades, expanded facilities and a new security hall capable of processing up to 3,600 passengers per hour.
During the month, Birmingham Airport also opened a new 24-hour McDonald’s restaurant, creating 100 local jobs.
Birmingham Airport serves a catchment area of 9.2 million people within one hour and 13.3 million within 90 minutes, while supporting an estimated 57,700 jobs across the wider West Midlands.
Commenting on the results, Matt Hazelwood, Chief Commercial Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “It has been a record-breaking month for passenger numbers here at BHX, with a 3.2% increase year-on-year. There has been a fantastic energy across the airport as our development plans continue to come to fruition, alongside the launch of new routes, including Nice with easyJet and Jersey with Jet2.com this month.”
He added, “We are now looking ahead and preparing for what promises to be a busy summer period.”
