Birmingham Airport targets expansion with £300 million investment drive

Birmingham AIrport

Situated in the heart of England, Birmingham Airport (BHX) is a pivotal transport hub serving the UK’s second city and wider Midlands region. The airport is served by over 35 partner airlines operating non-stop routes to 140 destinations with further one-stop connectivity to over 650 destinations worldwide. With a varied offering of low-cost, full service scheduled, charter and long-haul carriers, BHX is one of the fastest-growing airports in the UK and welcomed a record 13.6 million passengers in 2025. This upwards trajectory is expected to continue with the publication of the airport’s Master Plan this year which will outline an ambitious long-term vision of growth and transformation to fully unlock the airport’s full potential up until 2040.

Consistent investment to enhance the passenger experience is central to the airport’s current strategy and a record £300 million is scheduled to be invested into improving facilities including additional baggage make up facilities, maintenance of taxiways and stands and a redeveloped departure lounge offering new lounges, food and beverage outlets and children’s play areas. These developments build on the airport’s status as a key leisure airport, which was solidified after being recognised as the Best Medium-Sized UK Airport for Leisure Travel at the British Travel Awards 2025.

Due to its positioning as the ‘Gateway to the Midlands’, BHX benefits from one of the UK’s fastest growing regional economies with a dense multi-industry corporate ecosystem. Birmingham is the UK’s primary hub for FinTech and Professional Services outside of London and is an industrial powerhouse featuring Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Alstom. This vibrant economy ensures consistent, high-yield, year-round business travel for BHX, which handles the second largest proportion of business passengers after Heathrow. As a result of its catchment’s rich cultural diversity, Birmingham Airport has a strong VFR demand (Visiting Friends and Relatives) for a regional airport and benefits from a population with deep international ties that has been proven to travel regardless of economic cycles.

BHX is a well-connected airport with strong transport connections, and this accessibility will only strengthen over the next decade when Birmingham Airport becomes the only airport with a direct connection to HS2. The new high-speed rail line, which is Britain’s largest rail infrastructure project, will connect London to Birmingham Airport in less than 45 minutes – a shorter distance than most London airports.

Looking ahead, with many London airports at capacity, BHX remains ready to accommodate an increased catchment connected by HS2 and will be looking to bolster its route network with key unserved routes. Priority areas of focus for route development include direct links to high interest unserved European destinations including Hamburg, Helsinki, Oslo, Riga, Stuttgart and Vienna. Further afield, plans include transatlantic connectivity to New York and Toronto as a top priority, as well as direct access to key intercontinental markets to cater for VFR demand such as Hong Kong, Mumbai and Singapore.
