Keflavík Airport boosts network, capacity and infrastructure for busy summer

Keflavík Airport is gearing up for one of its busiest periods of the year this summer, as airlines boost operations, roll out new routes and prepare for a surge in passenger traffic.
Keflavík Airport will see a broad and diverse network this summer, with 28 airlines linking Iceland to 80 destinations across Europe and North America.
The expanded schedules highlight the country’s growing importance as a transatlantic gateway, with carriers boosting frequencies and strengthening access to key markets. This enhanced connectivity is expected to drive passenger volumes while supporting Iceland’s tourism industry during its busiest time of year.
Airlines are continuing to show strong confidence in the Icelandic market, with both new entrants and existing operators expanding their presence at Keflavík Airport this summer. Two carriers will debut services to the airport, with Alaska Airlines launching flights from Seattle and Air Transat from Montreal.
At the same time, established airlines are further broadening their networks. Icelandair is introducing new routes to Faro and Venice, while United Airlines will add Washington Dulles. Wizz Air is expanding with Vilnius and Wroclaw, easyJet with Lyon, and WestJet with Edmonton and Winnipeg.
Capacity growth is also evident across the board, with foreign carriers collectively increasing seat numbers by around 20% compared to last summer. Scandinavian Airlines is leading the expansion, adding close to 80,000 seats, representing a 44% increase.
LOT Polish Airlines is boosting capacity by 25% following its market entry last year, while British Airways will grow its offering from London Heathrow by 23%.
Keflavik Airport expands terminal
Several infrastructure projects aimed at improving the passenger experience are nearing completion ahead of the peak summer travel period.
Most notably, the terminal is being expanded by an additional 10,000 square metres, enhancing gate capacity, boarding facilities and waiting areas for both Schengen and non-Schengen passengers.
Working closely with its airline partners, Keflavík Airport is focused on ensuring a smooth and reliable travel experience throughout the busy summer period. From operational preparedness to passenger services, the airport’s team is geared up to handle the surge in traffic while maintaining high standards of efficiency and safety.
As traffic continues to grow, with more aircraft, destinations and passengers passing through its terminal, the upcoming summer season offers a further opportunity to highlight the strength and resilience of Iceland’s aviation sector, as well as the vital role airlines play in keeping the country connected to the rest of the world.
