London Southend’s new route shopping list

London Southend Airport (LSA) is attending Routes Europe in Aarhus to exploit the capacity gaps that exists in other London markets. “Barcelona is just one of several major London markets we have on our new routes shopping list as having a lot less seats on sale this summer from the London system than in 2019,” says Nigel Mayes Business Development Director at LSA. “Surprisingly, destinations like Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Budapest, Rome and Prague are all still well down in terms of capacity. We’ll be at Routes Europe to help provide a solution to this shortfall, particularly as London capacity reaches saturation again.”

LON capacity crisis? Not @LSA

As the city’s airports continue to move towards full recovery, available slots across London are becoming scarce, with total capacity this summer 97% returned. This puts LSA in a unique position as a pivotal gateway to the city. “London is effectively full again,” explains Mayes. “If you want to grow in the world’s biggest aviation market of 180 million annual passengers or you are currently not present in London, we are the only show in town.”

LSA also prides itself on offering the lowest airport charges in the London area. In addition to these cost savings, the airport also manages its own handling and fuel services – it’s one-stop-shop approach ensures further cost efficiency and smooth operations. Citing the airport’s new B2B creative Mayes added “You do the math…operating from London Southend is Plane Common SENse!”

Athens International Airport

The airport offers another key advantage, with its own train station located just 200 steps from the aircraft door. Such proximity between the aircraft and the station is a luxury rarely found at London’s other airports. “Seven minutes after disembarking from your flight, you can be on a train heading to London and stepping out into the city less than an hour after your flight arrived,” says Mayes.

Traffic growing fast

Looking ahead to the rest of 2024, the London airport, which previously had 40 routes in 2019, expects a significant uplift in passenger throughput this year. “We expect our traffic figure to nearly double this financial year,” concludes Mayes. This statement was backed up by the recent commitment by main partner easyJet to return for the W24/25 season with flights to Alicante, Amsterdam, Geneva and Paris CDG.
