London Stansted: 30 million passengers today, capacity in place for tomorrow

London Stansted has reached an important milestone in its history, joining the group of airports handling more than 30 million passengers annually. The achievement underlines its role as one of the United Kingdom’s busiest and most important airports.
This growth has not occurred by chance. It reflects a clear strategy, strong airline partnerships and a sustained focus on operational performance and future capacity development.
Over the past twelve months, London Stansted has welcomed five new airlines: Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Arkia, Air Algérie and Transavia. Each new entrant has strengthened the airport’s route network, reinforcing its position as London’s leading airport for choice, value and connectivity across Europe and beyond.
The launch of Turkish Airlines has been particularly significant. With up to 15 weekly flights, the carrier links Stansted directly to one of the world’s most extensive global networks via Istanbul. This marks a major step forward for the airport and represents a strong vote of confidence in both its operations and the dynamic, fast-growing region it serves.
Alongside new airline partners, existing carriers have continued to expand. Ryanair, Jet2 and British Airways have all increased their presence at Stansted, adding new routes and capacity in response to strong passenger demand. These long-term partnerships remain central to the airport’s continued growth and operational performance.
Looking ahead, London Stansted’s ambitions remain clear. Planning permission has been secured to grow to 51 million passengers per year, with work already underway to deliver the required capacity. A major transformation programme is set to provide additional peak-time slots, enhanced passenger facilities and improved operational efficiency, positioning the airport ahead of its London competitors.
Surpassing the 30 million passenger mark represents a significant milestone, but it is viewed as a foundation rather than an endpoint. With planning approvals in place and investment ongoing, London Stansted is positioning itself to support airline growth both now and in the years ahead.
