Milan Bergamo Airport enhances network and infrastructure this winter

Milan Bergamo
Wizz Air’s expansion at Bergamo had five new routes joining the network.

Milan Bergamo, Italy’s third-busiest airport and a key gateway for northern Italy, is in the midst of a dynamic winter season, with its network spanning 39 countries, from Latvia to Senegal. It boasts a balanced mix of leisure, diaspora and business destinations.

Milan Bergamo Airport continues to strengthen its collaboration with airline partners, led by its two largest operators, Ryanair and Wizz Air. The airport is also experiencing steady growth from full-service and hybrid carriers such as Georgian Airways, Eurowings, flydubai, Pegasus Airlines and Neos. In total, more than 20 airlines will maintain operations at Milan Bergamo Airport this winter.

Wizz Air expands footprint

Among the highlights of the new season is Wizz Air’s expansion at Bergamo, with five new routes joining the network. These include Chisinau (Moldova), Bucharest-Baneasa, Suceava and Sibiu (Romania), as well as Warsaw-Modlin (Poland).

These new services complement Wizz Air’s existing portfolio of 11 destinations from Bergamo and respond directly to the growing travel demand between northern Italy and Central-Eastern Europe.

Bergamo Airport grows Egypt and Middle East connectivity

In another boost to leisure and VFR (visiting-friends-and-relatives) traffic, Air Cairo will maintain its scheduled flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, launched this April, offering sun-seekers convenient access to Egypt’s Red Sea resorts during the winter.

Meanwhile, flydubai continues to deepen its presence at Bergamo Airport with double-daily flights to Dubai from 16 December. The service, operated in codeshare partnership with Emirates, will cater to strong demand for both point-to-point travel and onward connections across the Middle East, Africa and Asia via Dubai.

Air Arabia is similarly increasing services to Sharjah, introducing extra frequencies over the festive season, up to 11 times per week, and further enhancing connectivity between Lombardy and the UAE.

Transforming the passenger journey

This winter, Milan Bergamo Airport is pressing ahead with a series of major infrastructure upgrades, building on the expansion of its check-in hall completed ahead of the 2025 peak summer season.

The opening of Bergamo Airport’s completely redesigned security area and duty-free zone is scheduled for 26 November. The new security screening process will feature state-of-the-art scanners allowing passengers to keep liquids and electronics inside their bags, significantly improving speed and convenience.

Immediately after security, travellers will enter a new walk-through duty-free area, designed with a modern, Italian-inspired layout that highlights regional products alongside leading international brands.

The airport has opened two new non-Schengen gates, bringing their total number, both Schengen and non-Schengen, to 27. The existing gate system will also be further optimised to enhance operational efficiency.

In anticipation of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, Milan Bergamo Airport is keeping pace with growth while staying true to its roots and traveller-friendly approach, proving once again that Italy’s most innovative gateway lies at the foot of the Alps.
