Milan Bergamo expands cargo capacity as movements rise 30%

Milan Bergamo Airport is expanding its cargo activities through the development of BGY Logistic Park, as cargo aircraft movements at the airport continue to grow strongly.

A total of 1,142 cargo aircraft movements were recorded between January and August 2026, up from 877 during the same period last year, representing an increase of around 30%.

BGY Logistic Park, located on the northern side of the airport, comprises two warehouses, one operated by UPS and the other by SACBO/BGY International Services. Together, they provide more than 11,000 square metres of space dedicated to cargo operations.

The logistics area has its own customs gate and separate road access, allowing freight activities to be handled independently of the airport’s passenger operations and enabling goods to move more quickly from aircraft through customs and into the regional distribution network.

The facility forms part of Milan Bergamo Airport’s strategy to grow its cargo business and attract additional airline partners, with a particular focus on the expanding e-commerce market.

UPS is currently the airport’s largest cargo operator, accounting for more than 75% of cargo aircraft movements and around 60% of total freight tonnage. CAMEX and Georgian Airlines are the other principal cargo carriers serving Milan Bergamo, with both recording higher average loads supported by e-commerce traffic from China.

Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, Marketing & Communications at airport operator SACBO, said: “The growth of e-commerce is creating new opportunities for Milan Bergamo Airport, particularly for operators that need fast, reliable access to one of Europe’s strongest industrial and consumer markets. With BGY Logistic Park, our focus is on making cargo flows as efficient as possible and expanding the range of airline partners that can benefit from this location and infrastructure.”

Milan Bergamo Airport is located in Lombardy, Italy’s largest industrial region and one of Europe’s most important manufacturing and economic centres, providing cargo operators with access to a large concentration of manufacturers, distributors, logistics companies and consumers.

The airport operates around the clock and has a runway of approximately 3,000 metres, while BGY Logistic Park has been designed to reduce freight processing and onward delivery times from days to hours.

Milan Bergamo Airport now plans to further broaden its portfolio of cargo airline partners, particularly within the e-commerce sector.
