Montpellier – an airport for all seasons

mont-airport

Montpellier Méditerranée Airport (MPL) is not your average Mediterranean airport. Rather than having seasonal spikes, it sees a steady flow of passengers all year round, with winter traffic just a third lower than during the busy summer months.

Little wonder it was one of the fastest recovering French airports for the second year running in 2022, when it welcomed more than 1.7 million passengers – just 9% fewer than before the pandemic.

Driving the recovery is a mix of inbound and outbound passengers, most of who travel for VFR (45%), leisure (35%), or business (20%).

MPL’s momentum looks set to build this summer as the airport welcomes two new carriers: BA Euroflyer, which will fly to London Gatwick three times a week from May; and Eurowings Discover, which will fly twice a week to Frankfurt from June.

All told, 34 airports in 15 countries will be linked to MPL this summer, including three new destinations: Frankfurt (with Eurowings), and Tangier and Oujda with Air Arabia Maroc.

Airlines continue to invest. Air Arabia Maroc is set to add 17% more seats this summer compared to last summer, making MPL the airline’s leading French airport in terms of capacity. Meanwhile, Air Algérie will offer a third weekly flight to Oran and Algiers.

Looking north, SAS Scandinavian is set to restore the Stockholm Arlanda service that was axed by Transavia France. Air France, Norwegian, easyJet,Luxair and Transavia France are among the other airlines boosting capacity.

Overall, seat capacity this summer is forecast to be comparable to the summer of 2019 – a welcome sign that the turbulent pandemic years are behind it. By the end of the year, MPL expects more than 1.8 million passengers to have passed through its terminals.

But airport execs are not resting on its laurels as they look to tap unserved and undeserved markets, including Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Norway.
