Münster/Osnabrück Airport set for an exciting year following a positive 2023
In the picturesque northwest of Germany close to the Dutch border, Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) has emerged as a standout success in the country’s aviation sector in 2023, which is still navigating the challenges in the aftermath of the Covid-19 global health emergency. With its strategic location and a commitment to innovation, FMO matched pre-pandemic passenger levels, setting a course for a promising 2024.
991,471 passengers travelled through FMO in 2023, matching the pre-Covid levels of 2019. Notably, FMO exceeded the German average recovery rate, standing out as one of the few airports in the country to achieve full recovery. The resurgence was fuelled by a pronounced increase in leisure travel demand, particularly during the summer and autumn holiday seasons. The highlight came in October 2023, marking FMO’s strongest month since 2011, hosting an impressive 138,000 passengers.
Year of development and innovation
In 2023, FMO secured its reputation as the most popular airport in Germany, according to Google reviews, with an outstanding rating of 4.3 stars. This recognition underscores the airport’s dedication to providing a seamless and enjoyable travel experience.
In a dynamic and evolving aviation landscape, FMO has not only adapted but also embraced change. During 2023, the airport unveiled a fresh branding, along with a renewed online presence, which goes beyond aesthetics, providing a user-friendly interface that enhances communication with travellers.
FMO has recognised that the journey begins well before take-off and introduced a new lounge operated by the Global Lounge Network (GLN). Whether for business or leisure, the GLN-operated lounge at FMO is designed to elevate the overall travel experience, providing a tranquil retreat for passengers to unwind, work, or simply indulge in the anticipation of their upcoming journey.
FMO has also redefined the airport retail and dining experience by introducing an innovative duty-free and food & beverage concept, expertly operated by Smartseller. This joint venture, a collaboration between Heinemann Duty Free and Casualfood, seamlessly blends quality and convenience. Travelers at FMO now have access to a curated selection of duty-free offerings and a diverse array of dining options, all thoughtfully designed to cater to varying tastes and preferences.
New airlines, routes and services in 2024
Looking ahead, FMO is poised for further growth in 2024, anticipating increased traffic attributed to the introduction of new airlines, expanded routes, and increased frequencies.
During 2024, Condor and Marabu Airlines join as new operators to Mallorca and Heraklion. Mavi Gök Airlines and Pegasus Airlines will become new carriers connecting Münster/Osnabrück with Antalya. In addition, SunExpress is enhancing frequencies to the Turkish coastal city, with three flights per day for the entire S24. Furthermore, Ryanair is introducing Alicante as an exciting new destination, while Air Cairo is doubling frequencies to Hurghada, offering twice-weekly flights throughout the summer. Similarly, GP Aviation is ramping up frequencies to Pristina from three to five flights per week.
In 2024, FMO is set to elevate its passenger services by introducing a self-service solution for check-in and bag drop-off, ensuring a seamless travel experience for its ever-growing number of travellers.
Flexibility and aspirations
Boasting a 24/7 operational schedule without slot restrictions, FMO offers airlines unparalleled flexibility. The airport’s strategic location within a catchment area comprising more than 3.4 million inhabitants further enhances its appeal.
FMO is actively exploring avenues to expand its destination portfolio, guided by data highlighting key unserved routes. These include important points in Europe such as Istanbul, Vienna, Barcelona, London, and Rome; leisure destinations such as Malaga, Tenerife, Faro, Lanzarote, and Ibiza; as well as destinations catering for Visiting Friends and Family (VFR) such as Izmir, Adana, Kayseri, Ankara, and Zonguldak.
