Münster/Osnabrück was Germany’s fastest-growing airport in 2024; gained multiple new airlines & destinations

FR FMO-ALC

Münster/Osnabrück (FMO) is unusual in Germany. It operates on a 24/7 basis with no slot restrictions, offering unparalleled convenience, and Google reviews rate it 4.3 stars out of five, the highest in the country.

FMO welcomed almost 1.3 million passengers in 2024, surpassing 991,500 in 2023 by 30%. Strong leisure demand helped FMO to become Germany’s fastest-growing airport. This result does not come from a low base as FMO was already one of the few airports in Germany to have more than recovered from the pandemic in 2023.

Traffic was smashed in 2024

FMO’s growth was helped by the expansion of multiple incumbent carriers, particularly Ryanair and SunExpress. It also benefited from the arrival of Air Anka, Condor, Mavi Gök Airlines, Pegasus (which last served FMO in 2019), and Sundair, the latter of which bases an aircraft at the airport this winter. Nesma Airlines, Red Sea Airlines and Aegean Airlines will join them in 2025.

Ryanair added Alicante to its network on 31 March 2024 (2-weekly, converted to year-round along with Palma de Mallorca). It’ll be joined by Malaga on 1 April 2025 (2-weekly). Cirium indicates it is the first time FMO has had Alicante flights since 2008 and the first Malaga flights since 2018.

FMO regains London link in 2025; Izmir rejoins its network

Cirium shows that FMO had not had a UK connection since 2015 when Flybe (Stobart Air) flew to London SEN. Before that, airberlin had London STN flights until 2011 and CityJet had London LCY service between 2012 and 2014.

On 30 March 2025, Ryanair will introduce a 3-weekly STN operation. FMO will become one of 10 German destinations for the ULCC from STN. Ryanair will have six FMO routes in S25: Alicante, Corfu, Malaga, Palma, STN and Zadar.

On 30 June 2025, FMO will regain Izmir flights, courtesy of Corendon (weekly). It will make it the second Turkish destination after Antalya. Izmir was last served in 2022.
