Luís Miguel Capdeville Botelho, President of Visit Azores, said: “This new direct route from Dusseldorf reinforces the Azores’ international profile, enabling us to attract more visitors from one of our most important source markets. This connection allows us to welcome even more visitors who are curious to experience the unique natural beauty and sustainable tourism opportunities the Azores have to offer.”
Berta Cabral, Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure in the Azores government, added: “Germany remains one of our most strategic source markets, and this new flight is a key part of our tourism development plan. We are pleased to continue strengthening our connectivity.”
Ponta Delgada Airport sees tourism-driven growth
Ponta Delgada Airport serves as the main gateway to the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Located in Sao Miguel, on the largest island, the airport caters for the growing tourism demand for the Azores and facilitates connectivity within the archipelago to mainland Portugal and Europe, US and Canada.
Several major European legacy carriers serve Ponta Delgada as tourism demand for the Azores continues to grow. Among them are British Airways, Lufthansa and Iberia. Furthermore, United maintains seasonal operations to the airport from New York EWR.
Eurowings grows the airport’s LCC presence, complementing existing operations by the Air France-KLM subsidiary Transavia, as well as Ryanair.
