New Route of the Day (11 February 2024): Smartwings between Friedrichshafen and Gran Canaria

Smartwings introduced regular charter flights between Friedrichshafen in southern Germany, near the boarders of both Switzerland and Austria, and Gran Canaria on Sunday 11 February. The weekly 3,070-kilometre service will be maintained with a 189-seat 737-800 aircraft. No other airline operates between the two.

What they said

Bernd Behrend, Head of Customer Relations & Marketing, said: “We are very pleased that we can once again offer the popular and highly sought-after holiday destination Gran Canaria non-stop from Friedrichshafen this winter. In collaboration with numerous tour operators, we can offer holiday packages with hotels and transfers as well as flights for individual travellers from Friedrichshafen.”

Friedrichshafen yet to recover

Friedrichshafen Airport handled 329,100 passengers in 2023, which was down both 8% on 2022 and 33% on the pre-pandemic 2019. Its busiest year to date was in 2008 when it handled 649,646 travellers, back in the day it served as a base for Austrian carrier InterSky.

The airport only has two schedule year-round routes, one operated by Lufthansa from Frankfurt and the other being Wizz Air from Skopje. The Lufthansa service will be discontinued on 31 March, primarily due to issues the German flag carrier is facing over engines on new-generation Airbus neo planes, requiring it to reduce its network as aircraft undergo inspection.

Seven new routes this summer

Friedrichshafen will see the launch of an additional seven new routes this year, all of which will be on a seasonal basis, with some running as regular charters. Apart from the new flights to Gran Canaria, Smartwings will introduce services to Tenerife South on 27 September.

German carrier Avanti Air will commence flights between Friedrichshafen and Calvi, as well as Preveza/Lefkada, on 28 April and 11 May respectively, while AlbaStar will inaugurate operations to Palma de Mallorca on 28 April.

During the month of May, three airlines will introduce services from the German city, including Marabu to Heraklion, Rhein-Neckar Air to Elba, and Freebird Airlines to Antalya.
