New Route of the Day (13 January 2024): Austrian Airlines between Klagenfurt and Hamburg
Austrian Airlines commenced seasonal winter flights between Klagenfurt and Hamburg on Saturday 13 January. The 835-kilometre service will run weekly until 2 March with the 120-seat E195 aircraft. The Star Alliance member faces no competition between the two cities.
Flight OS283 departs Klagenfurt at 11:10 local time, arriving in Hamburg at 12:50. The return service, operating as flight OS284, takes off from the German city at 13:35, touching back down in Austria at 15:15 local time.
What they said
Michael Trestl, CCO of Austrian Airlines, said: “The introduction of a direct flight connection from Klagenfurt to Hamburg in our route network represents significant progress for Klagenfurt Airport. Both German and Austrian travellers can benefit from these flights, be it for exploring the city of Hamburg or for a holiday in Carinthia. We are pleased to expand our route network with this attractive connection and to offer our guests an even broader travel experience.”
Maximilian Wildt, Managing Director of Klagenfurt Airport, added: “By starting these direct flights, Austrian Airlines has shown its commitment to our airport. The direct connection from Hamburg opens up attractive travel options for winter holidaymakers from this region of Carinthia, as well as options for city breaks to Hamburg.”
Klagenfurt Airport reaches 73% of pre-Covid traffic
Located in southern Austria, close to the border with Slovenia and Italy, Klagenfurt Airport handled 153,536 passengers in 2023. Although the figure represents an 85% increase on 2022, it is still 26.7% below 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Approximately 18% of Klagenfurt Airport’s passengers come from neighbouring Slovenia.
Apart from Austrian’s new service to Hamburg, the national carrier serves Klagenfurt from Vienna 2-daily. The only other scheduled carrier to maintain flights to Austria’s sixth-largest city is Ryanair with 2-weekly year-round rotations to London STN and seasonal flights to Alicante (2-weekly) and Palma de Mallorca (3-weekly).
This summer, weekly charter flights to Paros/Naxos with Springer Reisen will also be maintained.
The slower recovery of Klagenfurt Airport can be attributed to a reduced number of airlines operating compared to 2019. During that time, in addition to Austrian Airlines, Eurowings operated flights to Cologne/Bonn, Transavia served Rotterdam, and easyJet had flights to London LGW.
