New Route of the Day (16 December 2023): Lufthansa between Munich and Oulu
Lufthansa introduced seasonal winter flights between Munich and Oulu in central Finland on Saturday 16 December. The 2,015-kilometre route will be maintained 2-weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays with the A319 aircraft. The carrier faces no competition on the service.
What they said
Petri Vouri, Director of Route Development at operator Finavia, said: “This route has been much awaited. Its launch is wonderful news both for our airport and the entire Oulu region. Munich Airport is an air traffic hub that offers comprehensive onward connections around the world. Munich is also a business centre, so in addition to leisure travel, the connection is very important for local companies. The route improves the accessibility of Finland, which we are actively working towards.”
Yrjotapio Kivisaari, CEO of Visit Oulu, added: “A significant proportion of foreign tourists to the region already come from Germany. The new route supports this development brilliantly, and we have worked hard to increase international tourism. Our goal is for the Oulu – Munich route to become a year-round, permanent service. Lufthansa has not yet taken any decisions on this, and we will, of course, try to do our share. The demand for flights is essential for further decisions. Now it is important that the route is actively used, so that we can continue to benefit from direct connections from Europe and get the competition we need at Oulu Airport.”
Oulu restores international flights to continental Europe
Lufthansa’s new service between Munich and Oulu becomes the Finnish city’s only international flight to continental Europe. The airport boasts domestic services to Helsinki operated by Finnair, while Aegean Airlines maintains seasonal summer operations from Chania on the island of Crete and will add flights from the island of Rhodes starting 26 April.
Oulu used to boast a larger portfolio of airlines and routes prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Apart from Finnair, the airport was served by Norwegian, SAS, and Corendon Airlines in 2019.
Oulu Airport handled 640,000 passengers in 2022, which is still down from a record high of 950,700 during the pre-pandemic 2019. The airport is the third busiest in Finland after Helsinki and Rovaniemi.
Lufthansa now serves five cities in Finland
Oulu becomes the fifth destination in Finland to be served by Lufthansa. In addition to the new route, the airline also operates flights from Munich to Helsinki and Kittila, while it maintains services from Frankfurt to Helsinki, Kuusamo and Ivalo.
During W23/24 the Lufthansa Group has significantly expanded its operations to Finland. Eurowings launched flights from Berlin to Rovaniemi, as well as from Dusseldorf to both Ivalo and Kuusamo.
On the other hand, Austrian Airlines introduced operations between Vienna and Rovaniemi in December, which will be followed by the addition of flights from the Austrian capital to Kittila on 20 January 2024.
Edelweiss Air will add services from Zurich to both Kuusamo and Ivalo in February 2024.
