New Route of the Day (21 January 2024): Eurowings between Düsseldorf and Kuusamo
Eurowings introduced a new seasonal winter service between Düsseldorf and Kuusamo in Finland on Sunday 21 January. The 2,070-kilometre route will be maintained weekly by the 180-seat A320 aircraft. The carrier faces no competition between the two cities. Flights will be maintained until 17 March.
Flight EW9276 departs Düsseldorf at 08:30 local time, arriving in Kuusamo at 12:30 local time. The return service, operating as flight EW9277, takes off from the Finnish airport at 13:20 local time, touching back down in Germany at 15:35 local time.
What they said
Mats Lindfors, CEO of the Ruka-Kuusamo Tourist Association, said: “Opening a new flight connection is an important response to increased demand. Germany has become one of Ruka-Kuusamo’s most important market areas with its 20,000 annual overnight stays. Kuusamo’s tourism is internationalising at a brisk pace, and the opening of scheduled flights brings great new opportunities in addition to several existing charter flights.”
Lufthansa Group expands Kuusamo presence
Eurowings’ new service to Kuusamo complements existing seasonal flights by its parent Lufthansa from Frankfurt, which have been in operation since 2017. Edelweiss Air, another Lufthansa Group carrier, will launch seasonal operations from Zurich to Kuusamo this winter, with flights commencing on 2 February.
Located in northeastern Finland, the entire population of the Kuusamo municipality counts just under 15,000 people. However, Kuusamo is a major centre for winter sports and welcomes approximately a million tourists every year. One of the largest ski resorts in Finland, Ruka, is situated in Kuusamo. Ruka is also the host of many international winter sports competitions.
Kuusamo Airport is predominately served by European carriers on a winter basis. Finnair’s domestic flights from Helsinki are the only year-round service to be maintained at the airport.
During W23/24 the Lufthansa Group has significantly expanded its operations to Finland. Apart from the new Kuusamo service, Eurowings has launched flights from Berlin to Rovaniemi, as well as from Dusseldorf to Ivalo.
On the other hand, Austrian Airlines introduced operations between Vienna and Rovaniemi in December 2023, which was followed by the addition of flights from the Austrian capital to Kittila on 20 January.
