New Route of the Day (23 September 2026): Aegean Airlines between Thessaloniki and Cairo

Aegean Airlines introduced operations between Greece’s second-largest city of Thessaloniki and Cairo on Wednesday 23 September. The 1,380-kilometre route will be maintained 2-weekly, on Wednesdays and Sundays, with the A320 aircraft. The Star Alliance member is the sole operator between the two cities.
What they said
Marina Valvi, Corporate Affairs and Communications Director at Aegean Airlines, said: “We are continuing to expand our network from Thessaloniki with new destinations such as Cairo, while increasing our capacity to 3.5 million seats in 2026. This investment will strengthen connectivity and support the tourism and economic development of northern Greece.”
Magdy Eshak, Chairman of Cairo Airport Company, added: “The launch of the direct Cairo – Thessaloniki service reflects Cairo International Airport’s operational and service capabilities. It will support growth in tourism and travel and strengthen air connectivity between Egypt and Greece.”
Greece – Egypt connectivity reaches record levels
Air connectivity between Greece and Egypt is currently concentrated on the Athens – Cairo route. As of late September, Aegean Airlines and EGYPTAIR each operate 2-daily flights, while Air Cairo maintains 6-weekly services, bringing the total to 34-weekly rotations. The route is therefore served almost 5-daily on average, making Cairo one of Athens’ most frequently served destinations in North Africa. Directflights.com
The launch of Aegean’s Thessaloniki – Cairo service has expanded the scheduled market beyond the two capitals, bringing the current total between Greece and Egypt to approximately 36-weekly rotations.
Seasonal flights have also linked Athens with Alexandria, although these concluded in mid-September.
Further growth is expected in December, when Sky Express is scheduled to enter the Athens – Cairo route, becoming the fourth airline operating between the two cities.
