AMM-VIE

Royal Jordanian inaugurated flights between its Amman hub and Vienna on Wednesday 24 June. The 2,450-kilometre route will be maintained 4-weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with the A321neo aircraft. The carrier faces competition from Ryanair, with its 3-weekly rotations.

Flight RJ159 departs Amman at 11:40 local time, arriving in Vienna at 14:50 local time. The return service, operating as flight RJ160, takes off at 15:50 local time, arriving back in the Jordanian capital at 20:30 local time.

What they said

Karim Makhlouf, Chief Commercial Officer of Royal Jordanian, said: “The launch of this operation marks an important step in expanding our European network and strengthening connectivity between Jordan and Austria, as well as Central Europe. In line with Royal Jordanian’s focus on promoting tourism into Jordan through our ExploRJordan initiative, this new route is expected to further position Jordan as an attractive tourism destination for the Austrian market.”

Julian Jager, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, added: “The return of Royal Jordanian to Vienna marks the continuation of a remarkable success story. Around 50 years ago, the airline launched its first flights between Vienna and Amman. We are therefore particularly pleased to see this long-standing connection celebrate its comeback during our anniversary year. The new direct service strengthens the international connectivity of Vienna Airport and creates additional travel opportunities for business travellers, tourists, and people visiting family and friends in the region. At the same time, it opens attractive onward connections and transfer options via the Amman hub. Jordan is regarded as one of the most politically and economically stable countries in the region, making it an important partner for international travel and business.”

Royal Jordanian with 25 destinations in Europe

Royal Jordanian has been expanding its European footprint, launching services to Munich earlier this year, while Trabzon and Antalya will be added in July. With the addition of Vienna, the carrier will operate flights to 25 destinations across Europe this summer. The figure would have been even higher had the airline proceeded with its initially planned services to Belgrade and Thessaloniki, which have either been deferred to 2027 or cancelled due to the conflict in the Middle East, which has also impacted Jordan.

Growth in Europe is part of Royal Jordanian’s broader strategy to expand its network to 60 destinations and grow its fleet to 42 aircraft in the coming years. This forms part of its ambitious five-year growth plan, which aims to develop Amman into a tourism destination and transfer hub for the Levant region.
