New Route of the Day (25 April 2024): China Southern Airlines between Shenyang and Frankfurt


China Southern Airlines commenced operations between Shenyang, the capital of China’s northeast Liaoning Province, and Frankfurt on Thursday 25 April. It marks the first scheduled service to be launched from China’s northeast to Germany. The 8,040-kilometre route will be maintained weekly with the 314-seat A350-900 aircraft.

Flight CZ8021 departs Shenyang at 01:30 local time, arriving in Frankfurt at 06:10 local time. The return service, operating as flight CZ8022, takes off from the German city at 14:15 local time, touching back down in China at 06:15 local time the following morning.

Wang Hai, Deputy General Manager of the Northern Branch at China Southern Airlines, said: “The new air route will play a positive role in strengthening economic and trade cooperation between China and Germany in the new era, promoting higher-level and higher-quality economic and trade cooperation between Liaoning and even the northeastern region of China and Germany.”

China – Germany operations lag pre-Covid levels

China and Germany are currently linked through nine scheduled services, down from eleven during the summer of 2019. Lufthansa, which used to maintain five routes from Frankfurt to the far east Asian country, now only operates two, to Beijing PEK and Shanghai PVG. However, Chinese carriers have stepped in, with Air China now serving four routes, China Southern Airlines two, and China Eastern Airways one.

The Shenyang – Frankfurt service is China Southern Airlines’ second to Germany. It also runs 2-weekly rotations between its Guangzhou hub and Frankfurt. It total, the carrier provides 939 weekly seats in each direction between the two countries.

Germany is a major source of foreign investment for Liaoning and an important trading partner. There are nearly 200 German companies settled in Liaoning.
