New Route of the Day (29 April 2023): Lufthansa between Frankfurt and Biarritz

FRA-BIQ

Lufthansa introduced seasonal flights between Frankfurt and Biarritz in France’s Basque Country on Saturday 29 April. The new 1,060-kilometre service will be maintained weekly with the A320-series aircraft. The carrier faces no competition between the two cities.

Flight LH1150 departs Frankfurt at 15:25 local time, arriving in Biarritz at 17:35. The return service, operating as LH1151, takes off from the French city at 18:20 local time, touching down back in Frankfurt at 20:35.

Lufthansa serves twelve airports in France

The Lufthansa Group has been steadily expanding its presence in Biarritz over the past few years. SWISS commenced services from Geneva in 2015, which now run 3-weekly. This was followed by the introduction of Lufthansa’s weekly flight from Munich in 2019, which is now accompanied by Frankfurt. Both airlines operate to the French city only during the summer.

Lufthansa currently serves twelve airports in France, including eleven from Frankfurt and nine from Munich. Apart from Biarritz, the German flag carrier maintains seasonal flights to Bastia from both of its hubs, with all remaining destinations in France operated on a year-round basis.

Biarritz nears million passengers per year

Situated on France’s Atlantic coast, Biarritz is a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, surf, and luxurious resorts. In 2019 the city hosted the 45th G7 summit. Its airport serves the Basque Country region, including the cities of Bayonne and Anglet. Last year, it handled over 931,000 passengers, which is still short of its pre-pandemic 2019 result of 1.06 million. Its busiest year to date was 2017 when it handled just over 1.19 million passengers.

Air France, easyJet, Ryanair and Transavia maintain year-round operations to Biarritz, with a further six airlines operating only over the summer season. The French flag carrier maintains the biggest network out of the city, with two year-round and five seasonal destinations. During S23, apart from Lufthansa’s new service from Frankfurt, Edelweiss Air will introduce 2-weekly flights from Zurich on 23 June, while Air France will add a weekly service from Ajaccio starting 1 July. Both will be maintained on a seasonal summer basis.
