New Route of the Day (5 January 2024): Iberia between Palma de Mallorca and Andorra
Iberia introduced seasonal flights between Palma de Mallorca and Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell (IATA code LEU), a small airport located in Spain, close to Andorra in the eastern Pyrenees, on Friday 5 January. Air Nostrum operates the service on behalf of Iberia using ATR 72-600s. The 330-kilometre route will be maintained 2-weekly, on Fridays and Sundays, and faces no competition. Services will be maintained until 31 March, coinciding with the ski season.
What they said
Joan Barrera, the Mayor of La Seu d’Urgell, said: “We are very happy, because this is already the second commercial route, after the one in Madrid, to be served by the airport and because it is a new opportunity to connect the territory of La Seu and Alt Urgell, as well as the Principality of Andorra with Mallorca. This is another example of the good collaboration between public administrations, in this case between the Generalitat of Catalonia, as the airport operator, the Government of Spain and, of course, the Principality of Andorra, which is the promoter of this new service. We hope that this three-month trial will go well and that this new route can continue to be served, apart from the one from Madrid, because it is worth it and it is an opportunity to improve connectivity.”
Andorra has no national airline
Andorra Airlines has been in the works for several years as a planned new start-up, however, the company is yet to get off the ground.
Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell Airport is located around 25 kilometres south of the Andorran capital. The facility, which has a 1,267-metre runway, has been upgraded in recent years and has welcomed occasional charter flights since 2015.
In late 2021, Iberia inaugurated flights from Madrid becoming the first regular scheduled service at the airport. Tourism is a key industry for Andorra with many French and Spaniards visiting the area. For travellers coming from further afield, the nearest major international airports are Barcelona (130 kilometres south-east) and Toulouse (145 kilometres to the north).
