New Route of the Day (9 March 2026): SAS between Copenhagen and Luxembourg

CPH-LUX

SAS introduced its second new route this month by launching flights between Copenhagen and Luxembourg on Monday 9 March. The 795-kilometre service will be maintained 13-weekly, twice per day throughout the week except Saturdays, with the CRJ900. The carrier will compete against 12-weekly Luxair flights.

SAS back in Luxembourg after over a decade

SAS had not served Luxembourg since 2015. At the time, it suspended the route after ten years of operation, believing that competition with Luxair, which began in 2013, had altered the economic balance of the route and reduced its profitability.

The return of SAS now comes as part of a wider expansion programme announced by the airline last year. This includes the opening of nine new routes, six new destinations and an increase in international connections from Copenhagen.

Luxembourg Airport breaks passenger record

Luxembourg is one of Europe’s most distinctive aviation markets, characterised by a small catchment area, a high propensity to travel and a single-airport structure centred on Luxembourg Airport.

Luxembourg Airport posted another record year in 2025, with passenger numbers reaching 5.3 million, close to a million additional travellers compared to the pre-pandemic’s 4.4 million in 2019.

Luxair with half of Luxembourg’s capacity

In 2025, Luxair held 50.3% of Luxembourg’s total capacity, serving up to 89 destinations during the summer. This dominance reflects Luxair’s long-standing role as Luxembourg’s primary network builder, focused on point-to-point European links and strategic hub connectivity that supports both leisure flows and the country’s premium business demand.

Luxair has publicly set an ambition to offer roughly 90 to 105 destinations within an eight-hour radius. In 2026 alone, the carrier is launching new routes to Alicante, Bilbao, Edinburgh, Girona, Helsinki and Tunis.

Through this strategy, the airline intends to deepen Luxembourg Airport’s relevance for both outbound leisure and inbound city-break travel, while also maintaining the critical feed into major European hub partners.
