New Route of the Day – Americas (11 January 2024): Spirit between Tampa and San Antonio

Spirit commenced seasonal flights between Tampa and San Antonio on Thursday 11 January. The 1,565-kilometre service will be maintained 4-weekly, on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, with the A320 aircraft. The ULCC will compete directly against Southwest Airlines on the route. Flights will run until 5 April.

What they said

Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports at San Antonio Airport System (SAAS), said: “We know our travellers will use this new service to Tampa. Once Spirit sees that, the goal is to expand it to daily service that’s offered year-round. Their presence in our market is giving families even more options and opportunities to take that vacation they might have been putting off. The competitive fares are also attracting people across the United States to check out San Antonio.”

San Antonio now has 45 routes

The new Tampa service, which has become San Antonio Airport’s 45th route, is the latest in a recent string of additions that will culminate with the launch of the airport’s first-ever nonstop service to Europe, a milestone in the local hospitality industry’s drive to introduce the city to overseas markets.

Starting in May, Condor plans to begin flying between Frankfurt and San Antonio. The announcement of that flight was followed by more new and expanded international and domestic destinations including to Torreon and Querétaro in Mexico, cities important to San Antonio’s growing automotive industry.

The additions come after tourism marketing organisation Visit San Antonio worked with Greater: SATX, the public-private regional economic development corporation, to create a fund to subsidise airlines for adding nonstop services. With the backing from member companies, the fund now has several million dollars on its account.

Spirit expands San Antonio presence

This is the seventh destination Spirit offers out of the San Antonio Airport since it first started serving the city in November 2022. It also offers flights to Baltimore, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York EWR and Orlando MCO. As a result, Tampa is Spirit’s third Florida destination out of San Antonio.

San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the United States based on its population and the second-largest in Texas after Houston. San Antonio is also the largest majority-Hispanic city in the United States, with 64% of its population being Hispanic.
