New Route of the Day – Americas (15 February 2024): American between Phoenix and Tijuana

American commenced flights between Phoenix and Tijuana in Mexico on Thursday 15 February. The 475-kilometre route will be maintained daily with the 76-seat E175 aircraft operated by American’s capacity provider SkyWest Airlines under the American Eagle brand. It faces no competition between the two cities.

Flight AA4841 is wheels up from Phoenix at 11:15 local time, arriving in Tijuana at 11:42 local time. The return service, operating under the same flights number, departs the Mexican city at 12:22 local time, touching back down on US soil at 14:42 local time.

What they said

Jose María Giraldo, General Director for Mexico at American, said: “American Airlines marks a milestone by inaugurating the new non-stop route between Tijuana and the United States through our connection centre in Phoenix. By joining these two cities, not only do we establish better connections, but we strengthen our more than 80-year commitment to Mexico.”

Raúl Revuelta Musalem, General Director of operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, noted: “The opening of this route is of great relevance for the Tijuana Airport, since with it international connectivity is resumed. At Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, we are committed to expansion and innovation in the aeronautical sector and, especially, to providing a better travel experience to our passengers.”

Tom Reott, Consul General of the United States in Tijuana, added: “We are very happy about the inauguration of the Phoenix-Tijuana flight. American Airlines has a large presence in Mexico, and the fact that the first international flight returns to Tijuana from the United States is an example of the importance of tourist, family, or economic exchange between our nations. Now even more Americans will have the beauties of Baja California right around the corner.”

US flights return to Tijuana

American becomes the only US carrier to serve Tijuana, located in the state of Baja California. The last time the airport boasted services to its northern neighbour was in 2018, when Mexican LCC Volaris maintained flights to Oakland.

Nearly 59% of Baja California’s tourists come from the US, of which 8% are from Arizona.

Tijuana is now the 27th destination for American in Mexico. Furthermore, it becomes American’s 12th destination in Mexico out of Phoenix, complementing Cancun, San Jose del Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Mazatlan, Hermosillo, Manzanillo, Mexico City, Monterrey, Loreto, and Zihuantanejo.
