New Route of the Day – Americas (26 March 2026): Aeromexico between Mexico City and Barcelona

MEX-BCN

Aeromexico added flights between Mexico City and Barcelona on Thursday 26 March. The 9,500-kilometre service will be maintained 6-weekly, each day except Tuesdays, with the 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft. The carrier will compete against daily Emirates flights between the two cities.

Flight AM37 departs Mexico City at 17:20 local time, arriving in Barcelona at 12:30 local time the following afternoon. The return service, operating as flight AM38, takes off at 14:45 local time, each day except Wednesdays, touching back down in Mexico at 19:25 local time.

Aeromexico returns to Barcelona

Aeromexico resumes its route between Mexico City and Barcelona after nearly six years of inactivity at El Prat Airport. The Mexican airline previously operated the route to Barcelona between 2012 and the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It had deferred its return amid airspace capacity constraints at Mexico City International Airport.

Barcelona joins an expanding European destination map for Aeromexico, which has been rebuilding its long-haul network following its restructuring earlier in the decade. The move comes as transatlantic demand between Europe and Latin America continues to recover and diversify beyond traditional gateways.

Shannon Airport

The SkyTeam member will serve a total of six European airports this summer. In addition to Barcelona, these include Madrid, London LHR, Rome FCO, Paris CDG and Amsterdam.

Aeromexico plans to grow its total Spain frequencies to around 40-weekly in summer 2026, which includes flights to Madrid from multiple Mexican cities, as well as the renewed Barcelona operation.

Aeromexico is North America’s tenth largest airline

During the busy second and third quarters of the year, Aeromexico will be the tenth-largest airline in North America and the third largest in Mexico, behind LCCs Volaris and Viva, which rank in seventh and eighth place on the continent, respectively.

Aeromexico has 15.1 million seats on the market during the two summer quarters, representing an increase of 3.2% compared to the previous year. Mexico boasts 76.4 million seats over the six-month period, representing an increase of 4% compared to the summer of 2025.
