FOR-LIS

LATAM inaugurated a new transatlantic service on Monday 7 April between Fortaleza in northeast Brazil and Lisbon. The 5,600-kilometre route will be maintained weekly with the 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. It will compete against daily TAP Portugal flights.

Flight LA8150 departs Fortaleza at 06:15 local time, arriving in Lisbon at 17:00. The return service, operating as flight LA8151, takes off from the Portuguese capital at 18:30 local time, touching back down in Brazil at 22:30 local time.

What they said

Eduardo Macedo, Head of Public Affairs at LATAM, said: “This route is not only important to passengers, but also for exports Some 20 tons of fruit will be transported to Europe using this service, reinforcing Ceara’s [state] strategic role in international logistics. LATAM is the company that invests the most in Brazil and Ceara. Over the last two years, we have expanded regional, domestic and international flights. This flight is further proof of our joint effort with the government to promote the state.”

Eduardo Bismarck, Secretary of Tourism of Ceara state, added: “Expanding Fortaleza’s connectivity, both nationally and internationally, is a priority for Governor Elmano de Freitas. This flight with LATAM, which is operated in partnership with some of the largest airlines in the world, represents more tourists, more savings and more visibility for our state. Fortaleza is thus consolidating itself as an important air hub in the Northeast, with new routes and greater capillarity.”

Lisbon linked to 12 cities in Brazil

TAP Portugal dominates the market between Lisbon and Brazil, with LATAM operating a total of just 8-weekly rotations to the Portuguese capital, seven of which are from Sao Paulo GRU. On the other hand, TAP maintains services to Belem, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Florianopolis, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro GIG, Sao Paulo GRU, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador. In total, it boasts 91-weekly flights from Lisbon to Brazil.

The only other airline operating flights between the Portuguese capital and South America’s largest country is Azul, which runs a 12-weekly service from Sao Paulo VCP. As a result, LATAM has the fewest flights and the lowest capacity among the three between Brazil and Lisbon.
