New Route of the Day – Americas (7 April 2026): United between Houston IAH and Montgomery

United added flights between Houston IAH and Montgomery in Alabama on Tuesday 7 April. The 890-kilometre service will be maintained 2-daily with the CRJ900 aircraft. It is the only airline to operate between the two cities.

United to cut capacity over fuel prices

United plans to lower its capacity by 5% across less profitable routes in the near term in response to surging fuel prices, which are expected to remain elevated above $100 per barrel through the end of 2027.

United is cancelling about 3% of capacity in off-peak periods in Q2 and Q3. The airline remains on track to achieve its long-term goals, with plans to take delivery of about 120 new jets, including 20 new 787s in 2027 and an additional 130 new aircraft by April 2028, unchanged.

Montgomery now served by three airlines

United becomes the third carrier to operate flights to Montgomery Airport, joining American with service to Charlotte, Dallas DFW and Washington DCA, as well as Delta with operations to Atlanta.

In 2025, Montgomery Airport handled 203,825 passengers, representing its best result since 2004, and an increase of 4.7% compared to the previous year.

Montgomery is the capital of Alabama and the third-largest city in the state. In addition to housing many Alabama government agencies, Montgomery has a large military presence, due to Maxwell Air Force Base. It also boasts three public universities.
