New Route of the Day – Americas (8 January 2024): American between Washington DCA and Wichita

American inaugurated flights between Washington DCA and Wichita, in south-central Kansas, on Monday 8 January. The 1,785-kilometre route will be maintained daily with the 76-seat E175 aircraft operated by American’s subsidiary Envoy Air. The airline faces no competition between the two cities.

Flight AA3701 departs Washington DCA at 11:34 local time, arriving in Wichita at 13:57 local time. The return service, operating under the same flight number, takes off from Kansas’ largest city at 14:51 local time, touching back down in the nation’s capital at 18:38 local time.

What they said

Phil Newman, Managing Director, Regulatory and Congressional Affairs at American, said: “American is excited to link Wichita to our nation’s capital via daily, nonstop service. This complements the service we recently announced to Phoenix and Miami, along with our existing robust service to Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago. In addition to flying American, Kansans can engage with our airline through co-branded credit card programs to earn miles and loyalty points. Our credit card partnerships allow routes like this one to succeed and contribute significantly to economic growth in the state of Kansas. We look forward to this new flight’s success.”

Jesse Romo, Director of Wichita Airport, added: “Washington, D.C. is a highly coveted market and we’re extremely grateful that American Airlines is adding this destination. Nonstop service to DC will undoubtedly prove to be a valuable resource for the business community and puts our region in a competitive position to enhance economic opportunities.”

American is Wichita’s largest airline

American maintains the biggest network out of Wichita and offers the most seat capacity out of the six airlines that serve the city. In addition to the new Washington DCA service, the airline maintains 10 to 11 daily flights from Wichita, including Chicago ORD, Dallas/Fort Worth, Phoenix, and Miami, the latter being operated on a seasonal winter basis. The carrier inaugurated services from Phoenix last June, while Miami was added to its Wichita network in November 2023.

American’s annual seat capacity share at Wichita will stand at 29% this year, followed by United, Southwest Airlines and Delta. Wichita Airport handled 1.5 million passengers in 2022.

Located in the southern part of Kansas, Wichita is known as the “Air Capital of the World” due to its significant role in the aviation industry. The city is a major centre for manufacturing, particularly in the production of aircraft and aircraft components. With a population of almost 400,000, Wichita is also home to several universities and cultural institutions.
