New Route of the Day – Americas (8 June 2024): Neos between New York JFK and Palermo

JFK-PMO

Italian leisure carrier Neos commenced a new seasonal summer service between New York JFK and Palermo on Saturday 8 June. The 7,160-kilometre route will be maintained 2-weekly on Mondays and Saturdays from New York JFK, with the 355-seat 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft until 27 September. The carrier has already confirmed the route will operate in 2025 as well, with 3-weekly flights. It faces no competition between the two cities.

Flight NO789 departs New York JFK at 17:00 local time, arriving in Palermo at 7:20 local time the following morning. The return service, operating as flight NO787, takes off from Falcone Borsellino Airport at 11:25 local time on Tuesdays and Sundays, arriving back in the Big Apple at 14:50 local time.

What they said

Carlo Stradiotti, CEO of Neos. said: “This new connection represents a further opportunity for the development of leisure and business flows between United States and Italy, with an initial goal of transporting some 20,000 passengers this summer.  The new intercontinental flight is the only direct service operated by an Italian carrier to and from Sicily and the United States and is an important opportunity for Italy’s largest island in terms of both outgoing and incoming traffic, without forgetting the many Italians residing in the Big Apple.”

Vito Riggio, CEO of Palermo Airport operator Gesap, added: “The route to New York operated by Neos is a great opportunity for Sicilians. Of course we are aiming at the presence of Americans in the Palermo area, which is rich in traditions and our culture which nurtures experiential tourism. The mere fact that the increase in frequencies for the 2025 summer season is being announced today gives us high hopes for the success of the flights, and the possibility that they will also be extended into the winter months.”

Record summer for Palermo Airport

Palermo Airport is on track for its busiest summer season. S24 sees a 10.6% year-on-year increase in available seat capacity, which is also up 31% on 2019. Ryanair is the largest carrier, followed by ITA Airways and easyJet.

As Sicily’s most populus city, Palermo’s operations revolve around summer demand. Ryanair has virtually half of Palermo’s capacity, with more than three quarters of its available seats deployed domestically on a 20-strong network.
