New Route of the Day – Americas (9 April 2022): Southwest between Tampa and Syracuse

TPA - SYR

Southwest now serves three destinations from Syracuse in New York state after starting a weekly service to Tampa in Florida on Saturday 9 April. The 1,780-kilometre route is already served 4-weekly by Frontier Airlines. Southwest began serving Syracuse on 14 November 2021 with 3-daily service from Baltimore/Washington. This was followed by weekly service to Orlando, which started on 20 November.

#1 carrier at Tampa with almost 40 routes this summer

While Southwest serves just three routes from Syracuse, it offers 38 non-stop routes from Tampa with a total of 477 weekly flights planned this August. This makes Southwest the leading airline at Tampa, accounting for just under 30% of seats and just over 30% of flights, well ahead of Delta and American.

Pre-pandemic, Tampa International Airport handled just over 22 million passengers in 2019. Cirium schedule data suggests that capacity this summer (August) will be up 9% compared with 2019. While Southwest’s capacity is up a modest 2%, Spirit has grown its seat offering by 30% compared with August 2019 and Frontier has increased its flights by 50%.
