Frontier Airlines commenced operations between Cleveland and Montego Bay in Jamaica on Saturday 9 March. The 2,565-kilometre service will be maintained 3-weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, with the 186-seat A320neo aircraft. The ULCC faces no competition.

Flight F9116 departs Cleveland at 09:00 local time, arriving in Montego Bay at 11:56 local time. The return service, operating as flight F9117, takes off from the Caribbean island at 13:16 local time, touching back down in Ohio at 18:08 local time.

What they said

Josh Flyr, Vice president for Network and Operations Design at Frontier Airlines, said: “This is an exciting milestone for Frontier and Cleveland as we expand our operation to offer service to a new international destination for CLE – Jamaica. Montego Bay is rich in history and offers a stunning array of beaches, along with a multitude of fun in the sun activities. Getting there is now easy and affordable thanks to Frontier’s low fares done right.”

Bryant L. Francis, Director of Port Control, added: “Cleveland has not had nonstop service to Montego Bay since 2017. We are thrilled that Frontier has chosen to add this service to its growing roster of nonstop routes at Hopkins, restoring a popular link connecting Northeast Ohio to the rich history and culture of Jamaica.”

Cleveland strengthens international network

With the addition of Jamaica, Cleveland will have nonstop flights to five international destinations – Dublin, Toronto YYZ, Punta Cana and Cancun. United also briefly offered a weekly service to the Bahamas, starting in late 2021, but the flights were short-lived.

In 2023, Cleveland Airport welcomed 212,919 travellers on international flights, representing a 40% increase over 2022. Much of that growth was due to the addition of the new service to Dublin by Aer Lingus, which started in May.

Cleveland has not had a scheduled commercial service to Jamaica for at least 20 years. In 2017, Vacation Express briefly offered weekly charter flights between Cleveland and Montego Bay.

Jamaica is the third-most visited island destination in the Caribbean behind the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Frontier also flies from Cleveland to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, as part of its international service offering.

Frontier opens Cleveland hub with ten new routes

Frontier Airlines is in the process of establishing a crew base at Cleveland Airport, which will result in the launch of ten new routes this May. They include Houston Intercontinental, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Myrtle Beach, Austin, Charleston, Savannah, Salt Lake City, Pensacola, Baltimore, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, and New York LGA.

The development will make Frontier the largest carrier at Cleveland by June in terms of available capacity. It is already the largest in regard to network size, maintaining 17 nonstop routes this winter.

Frontier is the fastest growing carrier in Cleveland, having increased passenger capacity by 53% over the past year.
