Russian carrier Azimuth Airways began a weekly service between Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia and Varna in Bulgaria on Wednesday 14 July. The 1,060-kilometre route is not served by any other carrier. The inaugural service (flight A4 293 operated by Sukhoi Superjet 100-95LR registration RA-89036) departed the Russian city at 09:57 local time and touched down at the Black Sea resort airport just under two hours later at 11:55 local time.
Varna’s only non-Moscow Russian route
Azimuth operates to 28 destinations from Rostov-on-Don according to Cirium Data and Analytics, the majority being domestic routes. Other international routes currently offered include Bishkek and Osh in Kyrgyzstan, Istanbul IST in Turkey and Yerevan in Armenia. For Varna this becomes the airport’s only Russian route that does not involve one of the airports serving Moscow; Aeroflot and Bulgaria Air both serve Moscow SVO, S7 Airlines serves Moscow DME, while Ural Airlines serves Moscow ZIA.
