New Routes of the Day 1 (31 March 2023): Aegean Airlines’ new routes from Athens
Aegean Airlines added two new seasonal destinations in the United Kingdom from its Athens hub on Friday 31 March with 2-weekly services to Birmingham and Bristol. The 2,560-kilometre route to Birmingham is operated on Tuesdays and Fridays and is contested by Jet2.com on a 2-weekly basis. The 2,565-kilometre Bristol service runs Mondays and Fridays with Aegean Airlines having to compete against easyJet and its 2-weekly rotations between the two cities. The Greek carrier will serve the pair of new routes with its 174-seat A320 aircraft. Aegean previously served Birmingham, while Bristol is a completely new addition.
What they said
Tom Screen, Aviation Director at Birmingham Airport, said: “We are very pleased to welcome back Aegean after a five-year absence. Whether customers want to enjoy historic Athens or travel onwards to the popular Greek islands, we are in no doubt that these Aegean services will be well subscribed. For customers travelling from Greece, Birmingham, at the heart of the growing West Midlands region, has strong appeal for those travelling on business or leisure.”
Dave Lees, Bristol Airport CEO, noted: “This is an incredibly exciting milestone for Bristol Airport adding Aegean Airlines to the Bristol Airport airline family. Aegean Airlines is a major global airline, and this decision shows confidence in the region. The regular scheduled service between Bristol and Athens opens up a wide range of European and worldwide connections to our customers. We are delighted to be collaborating with Aegean Airlines and further exciting route opportunities for the future.”
Aegean Airlines rebuilds UK network with three new routes
Aegean Airlines’ service to Birmingham marks the carrier’s return to the city after five years. The Star Alliance member initially introduced flights in 2017 but discontinued them in 2018. It scheduled to restore services between the two in S20 but they never materialised due to the pandemic.
In addition to Birmingham and Bristol, Aegean Airlines will commence a new seasonal 2-weekly service from Athens to Newcastle on 17 June. As a result, the carrier’s UK network out of Athens will count six destinations, in addition to the abovementioned.
- London LHR, 21-weekly
- Edinburgh, 3-weekly
- Manchester, 3-weekly
Aegean is yet to restore flights from Athens to London LGW which it served prior to the pandemic.
