New Routes of the Day 2 (13 December 2023): Wizz Air new routes from Catania

Wizz Air has grown its network from its Catania base with the addition this winter of new routes to Brussels CRL (launched on 6 December), Frankfurt HHN (10 December), Hamburg (13 December), Paris BVA (14 December) and Sharm El-Sheikh (29 October). This follows the launch during the summer season of new routes to Malta (summer-only), Milan LIN and Riyadh (summer-only). As a result, Wizz Air is now offering non-stop service to 21 destinations this winter from the Sicilian airport.

While six new routes have been added versus last winter, six routes are not operating this winter which were operating last winter. These are Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, London LGW, Milan MXP, Pisa and Rome FCO. Of these, only Cluj-Napoca is currently set to return as a summer-only route in 2024.

Catania set for record 2023 despite terminal fire

Catania is well on track to have its busiest ever year in 2023. The airport has handled 9.9 million passengers in the first 11 months of the year, despite a fire in the airport terminal on 16 July which reduced that month’s traffic by 26% compared with 2019. In November, traffic was 17% above 2019 levels.

Analysis of Cirium data shows that Ryanair remains Catania’s biggest operator accounting for 40% of seat capacity this year. Wizz Air is second with 17% followed by Alitalia (13%) and easyJet (12%). New carriers welcomed at the airport this year include Air Cairo, Air Serbia, Lumiwings and skyalps.
