What they said
Michael Deluce, CEO at Porter Airlines, said: “Starting new routes is something that we often do, but launching 11 at once from a new airport to transform a city’s connectivity is exceptional. This is truly meaningful for Montreal’s people, economy and tourism, and we’re proud to be a part of it. Demand is already exceeding our expectations, and as soon as travellers discover Porter’s unique offering, combined with MET’s comfort and convenience, they will have a new appreciation for air travel.”
Simon-Pierre Diamond, Interim President of Montreal Metropolitan Airport, added: “This new terminal is the result of a collaborative process involving citizens and elected officials, a process that began long before the ground-breaking ceremony. Today, we are proud to see that 80% of the population on Montreal’s South Shore supports the MET project.”
Montreal’s first airport
Montreal Metropolitan Airport, previously known as Saint-Hubert Airport before its recent rebranding, served as the city’s main airport until the opening of Montréal YUL in 1941. It was also home to Canada’s first air traffic control tower.
In recent decades, the airport has primarily been used by regional carrier Pascan Aviation and its turboprop fleet.
However, the development of Porter Airlines’ new terminal, along with other infrastructure upgrades including runway improvements, is expected to significantly increase traffic. The airport is projected to handle one million passengers in its first year following Porter’s arrival, rising to four million annually once it reaches full capacity.
Located close to downtown Montreal, the airport offers a convenient alternative to YUL.
With the launch of new services from Montreal Metropolitan Airport and continued operations at Montreal YUL, Porter is set to nearly double its capacity in the Greater Montreal area this summer, adding more than 1,000 flights.
In addition, a partnership with Pascan Aviation will strengthen regional connectivity across Quebec and the Maritimes, while providing access to Porter’s broader North American network.
