New Routes of the Day – Americas (3 May 2024): Air Canada’s new routes to Tulum

Air Canada introduced flights from both Toronto YYZ and Montreal to Tulum in Mexico on 3 May and 4 May respectively, becoming the first Canadian carrier to fly to the newly opened airport on the Mexican Caribbean coast. The 655-kilometre service between Toronto YYZ and Tulum will operate 2-weekly, on Fridays and Sundays, with the A320-family fleet, while the 3,080-kilometre route between Montreal and Tulum will run weekly, on Saturdays, with the A319 jet. The flights will be operated by Air Canada’s subsidiary Air Canada Rouge on a year-round basis.

What they said

Nino Montagnese, Vice President of Air Canada Vacations, said: “After much anticipation, we are delighted to be able to celebrate and share the launch of these exciting new routes with fellow travellers. With Air Canada as the exclusive carrier, we know we can provide unparalleled service and a fabulous Tulum vacation experience for Canadians.”

Mara Lezama, Governor of the state of Quintana Roo, added: “This new direct service marks an important milestone in the state’s international connectivity and reinforces Quintana Roo’s commitment to international tourism. This connectivity will allow visitors to enjoy rural populations, learn about our cultural, historical, gastronomic and artisan wealth and represents a new alternative to experience, to live the new era of the Mexican Caribbean. We invite all travellers from Toronto and Canada to discover Tulum and the many treasures our state has to offer.”

Tulum Airport welcomes first international flights

Tulum’s new Felipe Carrilo Puerto International Airport opened in December last year and welcomed its first international flights, from the US, in late March. Designed for tourists to skip the crowds in Cancun, the new airport has an annual capacity of 5.5 million passengers.

Apart from local carriers Aeromexico and Viva Aerobus operating domestic flights, Tulum Airport has recently seen the arrival of US carriers, including American (Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Miami), Delta (Atlanta), and United (Chicago ORD, Houston, and New York EWR). United will further expand its operations into Tulum by launching services from Los Angeles on 23 May and Denver on 13 December. Another US carrier, jetBlue, will join Tulum’s portfolio on 13 June with flights from New York JFK.

Tulum Airport will also boast transatlantic flights, with the Lufthansa leisure subsidiary Discover Airlines to commence seasonal winter operations from Frankfurt on 12 December.

Air Canada grows North America operations
