Newcastle Airport registers busiest day on record

Newcastle Airport has recorded its busiest day on record for international travel, handling 21,751 international passengers on Sunday, 23 August. The milestone comes amid continued expansion by airlines at the airport and follows the opening of easyJet’s new base in March.

The low-cost carrier now has 31 destinations on sale from Newcastle. Jet2.com has also expanded its network with new services to Porto, Preveza and Palermo, while Ryanair has added flights to Budapest, Malta and Marrakech. The additional capacity has contributed to a wider range of European leisure and city destinations available from the airport.

Newcastle Airport has invested almost £60 million in its facilities over the past two years to accommodate growing passenger numbers. The programme includes a three-storey terminal extension featuring a larger departure lounge with additional seating and toilet facilities. An expanded security search area is being used during peak periods, with the airport reporting that 99% of passengers continue to clear security in under ten minutes.

The international baggage reclaim hall has also been extended, with five baggage belts now in operation to increase arrivals capacity and improve passenger processing.

Newcastle handled 5,480,380 passengers in 2025. During the first six months of 2026 the airport welcomed 2,669,181 passengers. June alone saw 599,792 travellers pass through the airport, up 5% on the same month last year. Newcastle expects to handle a record six million passengers in 2026.
