Rovaniemi added 10+ airlines with huge international growth, but Finnair still the largest carrier

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland in Northern Finland more than 800 kilometres by road from Helsinki. Famous for being the hometown of Santa Claus and for all things winter, Rovaniemi capacity has grown significantly recently – and it continues.

Growth is all about the international market

According to Cirium schedules information, Rovaniemi has 348,000 departing seats in W23. This is by far its record and is 29% higher than its previous peak in W18.

The growth is entirely due to the international market, which has risen enormously, partly from a plethora of new carriers. The gap with intra-Finland capacity has diminished significantly.

  • December 2021: Eurowings
  • October 2022: Ryanair
  • December 2022: KLM
  • February 2023: Neos (some month-only flights before this)

Many new routes

Since the start of W23, the following routes have started or will do so. Many have never had Rovaniemi flights before. It means that, at the city level, Paris now has three airlines, the same number to London. Cirium informs that the UK is by far Rovaniemi’s leading international country. It accounts for about 36% of international capacity.

Finnair remains number one

Despite all the above developments, Finnair is still Rovaniemi’s leading airline, although its dominance has necessarily reduced considerably. It about one in two available seats, down from 69% in W19.

Ryanair has quickly become the second-largest carrier with a fifth of capacity on a network of five routes. In W19, Norwegian was second with 19%. Now it is fourth with just 5%.

Finnair now has two routes: the capital connection to Helsinki (53-weekly in mid-December, with 11 flights on Saturday for additional Santa Claus demand, mainly using A321s) and Tromsø. Served 2-weekly with the ATR 72, Tromsø is 450 kilometres away. The Northern Norway city has never been connected to Rovaniemi before.
