Stable Passenger Figures and Infrastructure Milestones at Keflavík Airport

KEF
Keflavik Airport has completed its largest expansion project in history

Keflavík Airport (KEF) welcomed 8,131,576 passengers in 2025, representing a 2% year-on-year decrease compared with 2024. Following several years of rapid growth after the pandemic, the airport now anticipates a transition towards more stable passenger volumes in the years ahead.

Passenger numbers are forecast to decline by approximately 7% in 2026, reflecting adjustments in airline capacity and market conditions. However, Keflavík Airport expects a return to steady growth of 3–5% annually over the following five years, underlining confidence in Iceland’s long-term connectivity and tourism appeal.

In 2025, 28 airlines operated direct services from KEF to 100 destinations, with London, Copenhagen, New York, Paris and Amsterdam ranking as the most popular routes. The airport’s route network expanded with the addition of 16 new destinations during the year.

Icelandair strengthened its network with six new destinations: Edinburgh, Gothenburg, Istanbul, Málaga, Miami and Nashville. Additional new routes included Basel (easyJet), Billund (Air Greenland), Munich (Discover Airlines), Stockholm (SAS), Tallinn (airBaltic) and Warsaw (LOT Polish Airlines). PLAY introduced four new destinations, Aalborg, Antalya, Faro and Valencia, to its schedule. However, the airline also announced its withdrawal from operations later in the year.

At the start of 2025, Keflavík Airport marked a major milestone with the East Wing expansion becoming fully operational for both aircraft and passengers. The new facilities include four additional boarding bridges, two bus gates and significantly expanded retail and dining areas.

The East Wing represents the largest single expansion project in the airport’s history. Construction began in mid-2021, with the first phase opening in early 2024, including a new baggage handling hall located on the first floor of the East Wing. The completion of the project enhances passenger experience and supports the airport’s long-term capacity and sustainability goals.
