Despite the chaotic geopolitical situation, which is slightly affecting the international activity of diplomats in Geneva, the airport’s long-haul traffic has seen some very positive developments recently.

As a reward for its efforts, its first success came in June with a new direct route between Shanghai PVG and Geneva, operated by China Eastern with 4-weekly frequencies. This makes Geneva the only airport in Switzerland with links to the two main Chinese cities and with two Chinese carriers!

Geneva Airport’s existing long-haul routes are also proving their good performance with several frequency increases. These include Ethiopian Airlines and Air China, which have gone up to 6-weekly flights, both operated by brand new A350 aircraft. This is a good sign that the airport’s NewGen incentive is having a positive impact.

The airport has also seen some newcomers this summer from the Middle East, including Gulf Air from Bahrain and Flynas from Riyadh.

Several new European and leisure destinations

Reflecting the strong purchasing power of Swiss people, leisure demand has been booming from Geneva this summer and bookings for the second half of the year are encouraging. As a result, airlines are consolidating their flight offer in GVA, focusing on the VFR communities and holiday makers.

For this summer, Air Serbia has added Belgrade – Geneva to its network, while AJet has launched Geneva – Istanbul SAW. Geneva – Tbilisi has also been a recent addition by easyJet and is proving successful, confirming the demand for medium-haul routes.

For the fall and winter, Krakow (Poland), Rennes (France) and Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) have already been announced by easyJet as new routes.

Untapped long-haul demand

Despite these positive trends, Geneva Airport still has untapped potential in several intercontinental markets, particularly in Asia and South America. Singapore stands out as the most promising opportunity, with strong business, diplomatic, and leisure demand. Other attractive routes include Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong in Asia and Sao Paulo as the top priority in South America, all of which show a particularly high-yield passenger demand.
