Wizz Air’s Sibiu base celebrates 10 years; has 74% of the airport’s seats in 2026

Wizz Air plays a critical role in serving Romania. The ULCC provides 43% of the nation’s flights and – thanks to many 239-seat A321neos – 51% of the seats for sale and 56% of the ASKs.

14 Romanian airports are served, including Sibiu, which is approximately in the centre of the country. Cirium schedule data shows that Wizz Air has flown there since June 2014, initially using non-based aircraft from London LTN. It was the second airline to fly between Sibiu and the UK. The first operator was the now-defunct Blue Air, which served London STN between 2009 and 2010.

Wizz Air opened a base at Sibiu on 19 August 2016. It has, therefore, just celebrated its 10th anniversary. One A320ceo was stationed there, with one frame seemingly there today, according to Flightradar24 information.

The base opening saw routes launched to Madrid, Memmingen, Milan BGY and Nuremberg. Only BGY is no longer served, as flights ended a month after they began in September 2016. The carrier switched to Milan MXP, with that route existing until 2018. Wizz Air attempted to make Milan flights work again in 2026, when it reintroduced service to BGY. This market only operated between January and June before ending again.

Wizz Air has 74% of Sibiu’s seats

Cirium data shows that Wizz Air has 230,000 one-way seats in 2026. Compared to 2022-2024, the capacity recovery was notable. 2026 has the third-highest volume to date. The airport accounts for 2.6% of the ULCC’s Romanian capacity, which is at the lowest level since 2023.

In 2026, Wizz Air has 74% of Sibiu’s seats, which has jumped seven percentage points year-over-year amid wider developments. It is at the second-highest level. Only the COVID-19-hit 2020 was higher (77%).

The picture is very different if only the second half of 2026 is considered. Between July and December, Cirium shows that Wizz Air has 89,000 one-way seats from Sibiu, which is down by 46% year-over-year. It is now the carrier’s fifth most-served Romanian airport.

7 routes are now served

In the last six months of 2026, Wizz Air’s Sibiu network consists of the following seven routes. The frequencies relate to what is available in mid-August and may differ at other times. With around 23% of the capacity, the original route to LTN remains by far the most-served market. Wizz Air does not compete directly or indirectly with another airline in any of those markets.

Between Wizz Air’s first Sibiu flight in June 2014 and July 2026, the ULCC has ceased flying to Basel, Birmingham, Brussels CRL, Copenhagen, Frankfurt HHN, Friedrichshafen, Hamburg, London SEN, Milan BGY, Milan MXP, Paris BVA, Tel Aviv and Vienna.
