Gibraltar Airport plans European expansion following historic treaty

Gibraltar Airport is seeking to attract new European air services following a landmark agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union, which has transformed its potential catchment area and opened up new opportunities for route development.

Barcelona, Madrid, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris are among the markets being targeted as the airport positions itself as a gateway to southern Spain.

Speaking to Air Service One at World Routes in Frankfurt, Kevin Bossino, CEO Tourism – Product Development at the Gibraltar Tourist Board, outlined how the treaty could reshape the airport’s future.

The treaty, which followed years of negotiations after Brexit, has resulted in Gibraltar Airport opening up to EU airlines and the removal of the physical border between Gibraltar and Spain, substantially improving accessibility between the two territories.

The new framework makes Gibraltar more accessible to travellers visiting nearby Spanish destinations.

“The practicality of having access to European flights and not having a border makes us a gateway to the southern Spain region. On one side you’ve got Costa del Sol, on the other side you’ve got Costa de la Luz”, Bossino explained.

The Gibraltar Tourist Board believes the changes will significantly increase the airport’s appeal to airlines by expanding its potential passenger base beyond Gibraltar itself. According to Bossino, the wider catchment area within 60 kilometres represents approximately 5.7 million two-way passengers, while the market within 35 kilometres, where Gibraltar is the closest airport, amounts to around 3.3 million.

“It’s a mindset change that Gibraltar is not only Gibraltar; Gibraltar is now a regional airport”, he said, emphasising the importance of communicating the airport’s expanded role to prospective airline partners.

The airport’s existing network comprises services to London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol. Bossino believes these established routes could support additional frequencies as the larger catchment area generates new demand.

European expansion opportunities

Beyond its existing UK network, Gibraltar is identifying opportunities for services to several European destinations. Barcelona, Madrid and Bilbao are among the leading candidates within Spain, while Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and destinations in Switzerland are also being considered.

The airport’s ability to accommodate additional services without significant slot constraints is another advantage as it seeks to attract airline interest.

“We’ve got availability. We’ve got slots available. I know a lot of airports struggle with slot availability, but we have the capacity to take more”, Bossino said.

He confirmed that interest from airlines has already emerged following the border changes, although wider industry challenges, including elevated fuel costs, could influence the timing of new services.

Bossino believes Gibraltar is particularly well positioned to attract passengers who currently travel through Malaga Airport to reach destinations in southern Spain. For some visitors, particularly those attending sporting events, conferences and other organised activities, Gibraltar can provide a considerably shorter journey to their final destination.

“We see Gibraltar as complementary to the extensive range of services available through Malaga, offering travellers an additional, convenient gateway to southern Spain”, he said, noting that some destinations requiring journeys of up to two hours from Malaga could be reached sooner from Gibraltar.

The airport is now working to raise awareness of its new opportunities among airlines, with events such as World Routes providing an important platform to promote the destination and its expanded catchment area.

While the changes have significantly improved Gibraltar’s growth prospects, Bossino acknowledged that it is still too early to establish firm passenger or route development targets for the coming years.

“Right now it’s early days. We’re scouting the market and laying the groundwork to see where we can grow”, he explained.

With available airport capacity, an expanded potential market and growing airline interest, Gibraltar is seeking to establish itself as a more prominent regional gateway, complementing its traditional role in serving the territory’s tourism and business sectors.
