What they said

Mantas Vrubliauskas, Vice President of Network Management at airBaltic, said: “With the introduction of direct flights between Ljubljana and Tenerife, we are expanding our network from Slovenia and complementing our existing services to Riga and Gran Canaria. The new route will make it easier for passengers to plan a winter getaway to one of the most popular sunshine destinations. Flights will operate at convenient times using our modern Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which we are also equipping with complimentary Starlink internet access.”

Jurgen Deischl, Managing Director of airport operator Fraport Slovenija, added: “We are delighted that airBaltic is continuing to expand its presence at Ljubljana Airport, further strengthening our successful partnership with the introduction of a third destination. Tenerife adds to the growing range of direct leisure destinations available from Ljubljana and responds to strong passenger demand for attractive year-round travel options. Working closely with airlines and tourism stakeholders, and through targeted incentive programmes, including nationally supported initiatives, we remain committed to developing a diverse and resilient route network that enhances Slovenia’s international accessibility and competitiveness. Our ambition is clear: to establish Ljubljana Airport as the airport of choice in the region, offering passengers excellent connectivity, a wide choice of destinations and a seamless travel experience.”

Ljubljana Airport to reach pre-pandemic figures in 2026

Ljubljana Airport will finally surpass its 2019 passenger figures in 2026 by surpassing 1.6 million travellers.

The airport has seen a significant decline in traffic over the past five years due to the bankruptcy of Slovenia’s former flag carrier Adria Airways in September 2019, which accounted for close to 60% of the airport’s traffic at the time, followed by the pandemic and strict travel restrictions imposed in Slovenia.

However, the airport has been rebuilding its network. Through a subsidy program run by the Slovenian government to improve the country’s air connectivity, the airport has attracted a number of new airlines, including the likes of airBaltic, Luxair, Iberia, Norwegian Air Shuttle and KLM. Most notably, in 2027, the airport will welcome its first scheduled long-haul service in over 30 years when United launches seasonal New York EWR – Ljubljana flights.
